Google Ad Grants: Eligibility and Benefits for Australian Not-for-Profits

Service Image

Google Ad Grants gives eligible Australian not-for-profits access to Search advertising. Whether you’re applying or already approved, the key questions are whether you qualify, how the grant could support your work and what value you can realistically expect from it.

‍

Are you eligible in Australia?

Google’s Australian eligibility guidance lists these qualifying categories:

‍

Some organisations connected to healthcare and education may still qualify. Hospitals, healthcare organisations, schools, academic institutions and universities are generally excluded, but charitable foundations linked to healthcare organisations and philanthropic arms of educational institutions may still be eligible in their own right. Government entities are ineligible.

Meeting one of these Australian criteria does not guarantee approval. Google verifies organisations through Goodstack as part of Google for Nonprofits approval. Ad Grants requires a separate application, and your website must meet its policies. If the criteria seem close, check the requirements before ruling out the opportunity.

‍

How can your organisation benefit?

Help people find support and opportunities

Someone searching for local support, a community program or a volunteer opportunity is already looking for something specific. Ad Grants can help your organisation reach them at that point, making it easier to find relevant services, events or ways to contribute. For organisations with several programs or locations, it can also help people discover support they may not know is available.

‍

Support fundraising and donor discovery

People looking for a cause to support may search for organisations working in that area or specific ways to give. Ad Grants can make your organisation and its fundraising opportunities easier to find, helping potential donors learn about your work and contribute when they’re ready.

‍

Extend your marketing budget

The grant covers Search ad media, giving an organisation visibility without paying for those clicks itself. That may leave more of its own marketing budget available for other priorities.

‍

Build awareness and future support

Not everyone is ready to act straight away. Someone may first encounter your organisation through social media, word of mouth or a campaign, then search later. Ad Grants can help connect that interest with your work.

Search can also introduce your organisation to people exploring an issue who do not yet know your work. Relevant information can build awareness, trust and interest among people already looking into that issue, giving them a reason to learn more, volunteer or donate when they’re ready. Search advertising will not reach people who are not searching, so it works best as one part of a wider marketing mix.

‍

What should you realistically expect?

Google Ad Grants provides up to US$10,000 a month in in-kind Search advertising. It is not cash, and unused allowance does not roll over. Ads may appear below paid ads or on their own.

Running a grant account still takes staff time and attention, even though Google covers the advertising. Measure it against the purpose it serves. For a service, that may mean enquiries or people accessing support; for volunteer recruitment, applications; for fundraising, donations. For awareness or education, look at whether people engage with information and explore the organisation’s work. Report those outcomes separately from direct fundraising results.

‍

Common questions

Can I use Ad Grants with paid Google Ads?

Yes. Eligible organisations can use both. Google says they do not compete, so the grant and a paid account can play different roles in your wider marketing.

‍

Why might my account not use the full allowance?

The US$10,000 is a ceiling, not guaranteed spend. Relevant search demand, competition and Google’s requirements can limit delivery. Low spend alone doesn’t tell you whether the grant is useful; look at the outcomes it supports and the time it requires.

‍

Make Google Ad Grants work for your organisation

If you’re not yet approved, we can help you check eligibility and work through the application. If you already have a grant but aren’t getting the value you expected, we can review what’s limiting its contribution and identify practical next steps.
